OVERVIEW: Waikiki - over a century ago this world-famous tourist destination was a swamp land. In 1921 draining of this swamp land began via creation of the Ala Wai Canal. Sands were brought in other parts of Oahu to create the stretches of Waikiki Beach. Today, Waikiki encompasses approximately one square mile with over 60,000 hotel rooms.
